Tuynhuys
<< back to Cape Town Travel Guide
Tuynhuys is the official office of the President of South Africa, and as such, is closed to the public. Located in the scenic avenues of the Company Gardens, the historic building was originally constructed in 1700 – some say, to serve as a tool shed for the vegetable garden established by Jan van Riebeeck. The vegetable garden is today’s sprawling Company Gardens, and the tool shed, the magnificent Tuynhuys.
Tuynhuys’ intriguing history
Towards the end of the 17th century, Tuynhuys was converted into a guest house, and used to welcome, entertain and house important guests to the Cape. In the mid-18th century, it was finally decided, after extensive renovations, that the building would be used as the official residence of the Governor. For many years it fulfilled this role, but was continually modified and renovated.
Historians believe that Tuynhuys was, in reality, unliveable – as evidenced by the fact that, despite redecorating and overhauling the residence, Lord Charles Somerset had to move out of it in 1824.
Today, Tuynhuys is the official office of the President when in Cape Town, and the magnificent grounds are worthy of any statesperson. The sculptures, fountains and beautiful grounds are meticulously maintained, and the building itself – a blend of neo-classic and Baroque elements -reflects the Dutch architectural trends of the time.
