The Planetarium in Cape Town

<< back to Cape Town Travel Guide

Explore the night skies and the mysteries of far-off galaxies when you visit the Planetarium in Cape Town, a fascinating attraction for kids and adults alike. The Iziko Planetarium is part of the South African Museum – the country’s oldest museum – and is located at the top of the beautiful Company Gardens in Cape Town. As the only planetarium in Cape Town, and one of only two in South Africa, it offers unique insight into the universe and the night sky.

How the Iziko Planetarium works
Inside the dome-shaped auditorium of the Planetarium, the night sky is recreated using a range of projectors and an advanced Minolta star machine. Viewers are invited to lie back in their tilting chairs and gaze up at the “sky”, which is explored in a variety of different planetarium shows daily. From kiddies shows to lectures, weekly sky updates and advanced shows for adults, the planetarium offers an exceptional audio-visual experience for young and old.

Other attractions at the Company Gardens
Planetarium shows run from Mondays to Saturdays (excluding the first Monday of the month) at various times throughout the day. It’s well worth combining a trip to the planetarium with a visit to the South Africa Museum (they’re housed in the same buildings), which offers valuable insight into the natural history of South Africa.

A stroll through the avenue of the Company Gardens will also lead you to the South African National Gallery, the South African Jewish Museum and the quaint tea room nestling beneath the trees of the Gardens.

Opting to reside in the city centre during your holiday will offer easy access to these top attractions, and more. Be sure to book your holiday accommodation at the luxury Taj Cape Town hotel, located opposite the historic Company Gardens.
