Rhodes Memorial

<< back to Cape Town Travel Guide

Rhodes Memorial is a dramatic landmark commemorating Cecil John Rhodes, one of the earliest founders of the sub-continent. Nestled at the foot of Devil’s Peak, within the lush expanses of the Table Mountain National Park, Rhodes Memorial is one of the most easily-accessible places from which to take in magnificent views of Cape Town.

From your vantage point high above the city, you’ll be able to enjoy panoramic views of Table Bay and False Bay, as well as the distant Hottentots Holland Mountains. Visit the memorial during sunset to watch the sun sinking into the sea – or go earlier in the day to enjoy breakfast, lunch or tea at the popular outdoor tearoom.

The construction of Rhodes Memorial
Rhodes Memorial as built in 1912, in honour of the Cape Colony’s Prime Minister, Cecil John Rhodes. In constructing this striking monument, no expense was spared, and the spot was chosen because it was Rhodes’ favourite place from which to view the city. The 49 steps of the monument represent each year of Rhodes’ life, and the granite from which they were constructed was quarried on Table Mountain.

Upon a pedestal is a bust of Rhodes, cast in bronze, and alongside this, a poem written by his close friend, Rudyard Kipling. Rhodes Memorial remains a popular place for both locals and visitors to take in the magnificent city of Cape Town, and is well worth a visit – especially during the summer months.

Rhodes Memorial is just 15 minutes from the city centre, where some of Cape Town’s leading accommodation venues are found. Book a suite at the new Taj Cape Town to experience the ultimate in 5-star holiday accommodation in the city centre.
