Discover one of the Cape’s most beautiful and diverse collections of indigenous flora at the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, set against the eastern slopes of Table Mountain. Here, in the grounds of one of the landscaped gardens, visitors will discover lush lawns, rich vegetation and a plethora of photographic opportunities.
Established nearly 100 years ago, Kirstenbosch consists of a unique combination of natural reserve and cultivated land. Of its 528 hectares, just 60 are cultivated. The remainder is a natural reserve, featuring some of the Cape’s most beautiful and rare plants, trees and flowers. The gardens are nourished by the Liesbeek River.
Things to do at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens
Several scenic paths run through the Kirstenbosch Gardens, and all the paths in the main section of the gardens are paved. Explore the Smuts Track, which winds through the indigenous tree forest, up Skeleton Gorge and to the peak of Table Mountain. Or choose Forest Walk for a leafier stroll through the collections of red alder, yellowwood and ironwood. There are also special paths for wheelchairs and baby strollers, as well as a Braille path for the blind, and longer, more intense paths that offer walks of up to 3 hours through the lush scenery.
Kirstenbosch also features a beautiful indoor and outdoor restaurant, where visitors can enjoy refreshments whilst taking in the gorgeous views of Table Mountain. During the summer months, music concerts are held on the slopes of the lawns. Experience the sound of some of South Africa’s top bands and performers whilst enjoying a sunset picnic.
