Houses of Parliament
<< back to Cape Town Travel Guide
Although the seat of South Africa’s government is in Pretoria, Cape Town is the legislative capital of the country, and as such, the Houses of Parliament are located in the bustling CBD. It’s here that the State of the Nation Address is given by the president each year, and where the opening of Parliament takes place.
The Houses of Parliament are found in the magnificent Company Gardens, and the entrance is located, of course, on Government Avenue. The area bustles with activity, and it’s not just parliamentarians and ministers who can be seen gracing the shady avenues and cool interiors of the Houses. The area also hums with journalists, who scout out the latest news from this prime location.
During parliamentary sessions from January to July, visitors can purchase tickets to sit in the public gallery and watch over the proceedings -just remember to take your passport with you.
