Greenmarket Square

<< back to Cape Town Travel Guide

Greenmarket Square is one of Cape Town’s oldest markets, ensconced in the vibrant heart of the city centre. Over the years, the cobbled square has served as a slave market, a fruit and vegetable market and, much later, the thriving craft market that it is today.

For more than 20 years, Greenmarket Square has been a place of trade and bartering. In its early years, the market only operated a few times a week with a handful of stalls. Today, it’s a vibrant, colourful bazaar that trades just like a normal business – with one major difference: Shoppers are encouraged to bargain and barter for the best deals!

What you’ll find at Greenmarket Square
If you’re looking for the most authentic South African curios, Greenmarket Square is the place to find them. From masks, jewellery and books to magnificently-crafted bowls, artworks, clothing and wooden carvings, you’ll find an extensive array of African curios at the market. Also look out for hand-painted fabrics, footwear, sunglasses, CDs and trinkets from all over the African continent.

Bordering the quaint square is the Old Townhouse Museum, which features famous works of art and a beautiful tea garden. You’ll also be able to explore cathedrals, various museums and popular shops, all of which are found in the area. Greenmarket Square is lined with sidewalk cafes, where you can enjoy refreshments and snacks after all the shopping!
