Chapman’s Peak Drive

<< back to Cape Town Travel Guide

Chapman’s Peak Drive is one of the most beautiful coastal routes in the world, offering unsurpassed views of the Atlantic Ocean all the way from Hout Bay to Noordhoek. Carved out of mountain face in the early part of the 20th century, Chapman’s Peak Drive is one of the most well-known routes in the Western Cape, and offers views that are unparalleled in any other part of the province.

The dramatic pass, with its 114 curves and sheer rock-faces, was constructed during the First World War. The Chapman’s Peak experience is one that cannot be missed, offering as it does some of the most spectacular scenery in South Africa.

From the pass, you’ll take in views of ocean expanses and rocky facades, as the sea laps the untouched shores at the base of Chapman’s Peak. There are plenty of places along the way where you can stop for a picnic, take photos, or simply enjoy the views before you.

Chapman’s Peak Drive: Linking Cape Town to the South Peninsula
Chapman’s Peak Drive is not just aesthetically arresting: It also offers a far shorter route from Cape Town to the South Peninsula, cutting commuting time by as much as 20 minutes. The pass begins at the Hout Bay harbour and travels all the way to Noordhoek. Both suburbs offer a range of activities for visitors, including popular beaches, scenic walking routes and restaurants.

Cape Town is a magnificent city to explore by car. It’s a good idea to book hotel accommodation in the Cape Town city centre, and thus to enjoy easy, hassle-free access to the Cape’s top tourist attractions.
