Centre for the Book: National Library of South Africa

The Centre for the Book is a division of the National Library of South Africa, and its mission is to establish a culture of reading, writing and publishing in South Africa, in all local languages. The Centre for the Book also aims to make books easily accessible to all South Africans.
Located in the historic centre of Cape Town, the National Library is the leading library in Africa, and also serves as a centre for information and education. It houses an extensive collection of archived documents, works to preserve documents, and also offers a range of supplementary library services. All of these services are aimed at educating and informing the South African public.
The work of the National Library of South Africa
The National Library of South Africa collects local, foreign and special interest publications, records its bibliographic services, preserves old, rare and valuable documents, supplies information to the public via its reference services, and provides access to information for researchers and other libraries through its document supply service.
The National Library and the Centre for the Book, which is housed within it, are located in Queen Victoria Street, close to the South African Museum. It’s also near to many other attractions in the Cape Town city centre, including the Iziko Planetarium, the Company Gardens and the South African National Gallery.
