The Castle of Good Hope
<< back to Cape Town Travel Guide
The Castle of Good Hope is the oldest building in South Africa, and has been carefully preserved over the centuries. Built between 1666 and 1679, the Castle offers fascinating insight into the Cape’s history, inviting visitors to explore its art collections, military museum and replica of its original forge. As a building so steeped in history and tradition, the Castle of Good Hope is a valuable addition to any Cape Town travel itinerary.

Attractions at the Castle of Good Hope
Two of the Castle’s major attractions are its military museum, and the museum of the William Fehr Collection. Today, the Castle serves as the military headquarters for the Cape Province, and the military museum features one of the country’s top sword collections, as well as depictions of Cape military history. The William Fehr Collection showcases historical paintings, antique furniture and artworks that have special historic relevance to the Cape.
Daily tours are offered at the Castle, and are highly recommended for anyone who wants to explore the Castle in its entirety – from its inner courtyards and bell tower to the church, bakery, living quarters and cells within the Castle walls. Also be sure to visit the famous Kat Balcony, where, in the olden days, announcements were made, judicial sentences were read, and official visitors to the Castle were met.
The tours are held daily (Monday to Saturday) at 11h00, 12h00 and 14h00, and the changing of the guard takes place each day at noon.
