Cape Town Weather

<< back to Cape Town Travel Guide

Situated at the point where two oceans meet, Cape Town boasts a climate that is the envy of many other cities in South Africa. Featuring what may be described as a Mediterranean climate, the city is famous its warm, balmy summers and cool, wet winters that don’t grow too cold.

A lush and welcoming city that offers a host of holiday activities, Cape Town makes an ideal travel destination at any time of year. Of course, the most popular time to visit the Cape is during the summer, when the city is alive with summertime excitement.

Travel to Cape Town during the warm months, and spend your days lazing on the beaches, hiking up the famous mountain, or shopping at the world-class V&A Waterfront, situated on the harbour’s edge. You’ll also be able to take in the city’s golden sunsets from a host of breathtaking locations – the top of Table Mountain, a trendy beachside bar, or the luxury of an ideally-positioned city hotel.

Cape Town’s climate: What to expect at different times of year
Cape Town’s seasons are well defined. The height of the summer usually falls between December and February, when temperate range from the mid twenties to the low-to-mid thirties. Pack light clothing for summer in Cape Town, but remember to bring a warm outfit or two for the odd cool day.

The chilliest of winter days generally fall between June and August. Pack warm clothes – but again, a light outfit or two is a good idea. Every now and then during winter, an unseasonably warm day takes the Mother City by surprise! During spring and autumn, temperatures are usually in the mid-teens to low-twenties. Remember to bring boots and raincoats for winter, and sun-block, hats and bathing suits for summer.
