<< back to Cape Town Travel Guide
The Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon is Cape Town’s premier road running event, attracting more than 20,000 local and international participants each year. The principal event is the 56-kilometre ultra-marathon which takes athletes past both of the major oceans surrounding Cape Town – the Indian and the Atlantic – and some of the most magnificent views in the city.
Set against a backdrop of Chapman’s Peak, Hout Bay and Suikerbossie Pass, combined with the views of the two majestic oceans, the Two Oceans Marathon is widely regarded one of the world’s most beautiful road running events.
Two Oceans Marathon highlights
The internationally-respected road running event was first held in 1970, and just 26 athletes participated in the event. Today, runners from across South Africa and abroad travel to Cape Town to take part in the event, which also includes a 21-kilometre half-marathon, two trail runs and family-orientated fun-runs.
The marathon is as gruelling as it is spectacular, providing a challenging test of fitness to both recreational and professional runners. Well organised and offering an array of event-related activities, the Two Oceans Marathon is one of the most popular sporting activities on Cape Town’s annual calendar, and is a fantastic day out for participants and spectators alike. In fact, participants consistently vote it one of South Africa’s top road-racing events.
