Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour
<< back to Cape Town Travel Guide
Few places on earth are more fitting than Cape Town for the world’s largest individually-timed cycle tour. The annual Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour takes participants on a 109-kilometre race through some of the city’s most magnificent stretches, whilst testing their endurance and timing their results. In fact, the Cycle has become South Africa’s most prestigious annual cycling event.
Each year, the Cycle Tour attracts thousands of participants from around South Africa and abroad. Having grown into a world-renowned sporting event, foreign cyclists are increasingly travelling to Cape Town to participate in the tour, offering valuable tourism opportunities for the city. Roughly 35,000 people participate in the race which takes place in March each year.
Major cycling events in Cape Town during the build-up to the race
Given the scope of the event, there are several smaller races, as well as cycle-related events, that take place before and during the Cycle Tour. The Giro del Capo is a 4-day professional cycling race that takes place before the Cape Argus Cycle Tour, ending on the day before it is held. It attracts professional cyclists from across the country, as well as abroad, and the participants of the Giro del Capo lead the start of the Argus Cycle Tour.
Lifecycle Week also takes place during this time, and features a variety of cycling-related events for all ages, levels and cycle disciplines. These include junior cycle tours, the Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Mountain Bike Challenge, and the Cycle Tour Expo, SA’s biggest cycling, fitness and health trade fair.
