Cape Town City Hall
<< back to Cape Town Travel Guide
The Cape Town City Hall is an impressive Edwardian-styled building, more than a hundred years old, and located in Cape Town’s Darling Street -one of the oldest streets in the city.
The City Hall is ideally positioned close to many other attractions in the city centre, including the Castle of Good Hope, the historic Adderley Street, and an array of world-class museums. It’s a major attraction among visitors to the Cape, despite the fact that the building is in dire need of repair.
Much controversy surrounds the future of this elegant old building. It is in the process of “transformation”, yet little work has, at present, been done to restore the Italian Renaissance-styled building and its impressive clock tower, which is exactly half the size of the Big Ben in London.
The offices of the City of Cape Town are no longer housed in the City Hall. Instead, the building is used as a regular venue for concerts -particularly those of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra.
