Cape Point Nature Reserve

<< back to Cape Town Travel Guide

At the entrance to the Cape of Good Hope, where two great oceans meet, you’ll find the Cape Point Nature Reserve – one of the most visually spectacular sites in South Africa. Located on the south-western tip of the continent, Cape Point Nature Reserve forms part of the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP), a Natural World Heritage Site, and one of the most famous nature reserves in the world.

Cape Point is a truly dramatic sight to behold. Surrounded by the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, its rock faces jut into the powerful waves, and sandy stretches of beach create a striking juxtaposition to the lush vegetation bordering the shores.

Fynbos, fauna and flora: Bio-diverse Cape Point
Cape Point is celebrated for its natural wealth, and its diversity of indigenous flora and fauna. Many endangered plant and animal species are found here, including three species of dolphin, four whale species, tortoises, birds, baboons and large game animals, such as eland, antelope and bontebok.

Although the area makes up less than 0.5% of the continent, it is home to 20% of Africa’s flora species. Indigenous Fynbos grows here in abundance, providing sustenance and shelter to the area’s creatures. Cape Point is a superb example of bio-diversity and symbiosis, and what’s most remarkable is that it’s a thriving natural reserve on the outskirts of a major metropolitan area!

There are hiking and walking trails for visitors, as well as the Cape Point funicular, which takes visitors on a scenic tour through the nature reserve to the old Cape Point Lighthouse. The eco-friendly funicular is the only one of its kind in existence.

Don’t miss your chance to see this magnificent Natural World Heritage Site. Book your luxury Cape Town accommodation at the conveniently-situated Taj Cape Town, and relax in luxurious surrounds after a day spent exploring nature.
