Quintessentially festive, The Nutcracker is a fairytale ballet by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky which has thrilled and enchanted audiences of all ages for over a hundred years. Now the international ice dance sensation – The Imperial Ice Stars – will be returning to South Africa this January with the World Premiere of their new production: The Nutcracker on Ice.

Composed between 1891 and 1892, the ballet was based on story called The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann, a German Romantic author of fantasy and horror. It tells the classic Russian tale of Maria, whose magical Christmas gift from her mysterious godfather (a nutcracker doll) is brought to life, taking her on a series of adventures with the Mouse King, the enchanted Prince, and the Sugar Plum Fairy.

Tchaikovsky created a suite for the orchestra comprised of the best music from the ballet, commonly known as The Nutcracker Suite. This collection of music was made popular in the 1940s by Walt Disney in the animated film Fantasia. Until the 1960s, it was rare for the ballet to be performed in full and all people knew of the ballet was its enchanting music.

Acclaimed Artistic Director Tony Mercer has now teamed up with multiple world champion figure skaters Evgeny Platov and Maxim Staviski to create a bevy of breathtaking high-speed leaps and throws as well as awe-inspiring acrobatics and sublime ice dancing for the new production.

A 25-strong cast of World, European and National Championship skaters are sure to astound Cape Town audiences with their dramatic performances on the frozen theatre stage. Beautiful sets by leading Australian scenic designer Eamon D’Arcy and stylish costumes from renowned Russian designer Albina Gabueva round out what is set to be a most unforgettable and visually rich experience.

The Nutcracker on Ice will be performed at the Artscape Theatre from the 19 January to 11 February 2012 and is the holiday must-see performance this summer. Tickets are available from Computicket or on the Nutcracker on Ice website.

Located on the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town Helicopters has been offering passengers breathtaking views of the Cape Town coastline coupled with the exhilaration of flying aboard their 4-, 5- and 7-seater helicopters since 1989.

The entry level flight – The Hopper Flight – provides a gentle taster of Cape Town from the air with views of the Cape Town Stadium, the white beaches of Clifton, Camps Bay and the majestic Twelve Apostles.

These flights around the Peninsula scale up to include Hout Bay and Chapman’s Peak; Fish Hoek and Muizenberg. Finally, a full trip from Cape Town to the Cape of Good Hope allows views of the Cape Peninsula from all angles before flying along the False Bay coast back to Cape Town.
