For a walking tour of Cape Town that will introduce you to the very heart and soul of the mother city, the Footsteps to Freedom historic walk will educate and enlighten any visitor.

Exploring the streets of Cape Town, this three hour walking tour traces 350 years of the city’s history including the challenges faced by the early Dutch settlers, the plight of slaves, the Cape as a colony, the dark days of apartheid and the dawning of the new South Africa as a rainbow nation. The tour starts out at the Cape Town Visitor Information centre on Burg Street and takes you on a tour of some of Cape Town’s most important historical sites.

St Georges Mall, originally an important thoroughfare for Dutch settles between the seas and the company gardens, is now a pedestrianised walkway cut off from traffic and lined with cafes, galleries, coffee shops, curio stores and restaurants. Street vendors ply their wares, and entertainment in the form of drummers, dancers and choirs can also be found.

Hand made goods from across the continent can be found at Green Market Square, originally a fresh produce market where farmers and slaves gathered to trade goods, find skilled artisans or even hire wagons and carts.

The Grand Parade is Cape Town’s oldest square, used primarily as a military parade ground and commercial centre. The Castle, one of the oldest occupied buildings in Cape Town, has had a rich history – from being the administrative, social and commercial hub of the Cape Colony to being a military command centre and, finally, a military museum.

The District Six Museum captures the loss experienced by over sixty thousand people, who lost their homes when the apartheid government declared the area a “white group area” and relocated an entire community of freed slaves, merchants, artisans, labourers and immigrants over the course of fifteen years.

Footsteps to Freedom includes many more historic sites including, the Slave Lodge and Slave Tree site, Parliament, the Company Gardens, The South African National Gallery, South African Museum and St Georges Cathedral.

To learn more about the Cape Town’s rich heritage, any of the dedicated concierge staff at the Taj will be delighted to offer insight and guide you towards the city’s best tours, museums and cultural highlights.

The Taj Cape Town provides luxury accommodation in Cape Town and is within walking distance of the Cape Town Visitor Information centre and many of the city’s historical landmarks.
