  1. Summer is a great time to visit the Kirstenbosch gardens because with the rainfall starting to increase from around 15mm to 50mm in late February the garden is reaching full flowering splendour. Typically a wide rage of Agapanthus tend steal the show in the gardens – especially in the shaded parts of the garden, like the Dell and Camphor Avenue. Also, look out for the orange heads of the bloodflowers, which stand out like balls of fire, and also Cape primulas with their trumpet shaped flowers.

This is also the season for the beautiful red orchid, Disa uniflora which is found on Table Mountain. You will however have to go hiking into the areas with the streams as these flowers are rarely seen along the public paths and open areas. In 10 years of exploring the mountain, I have never come across one of these beauties in an accessible area. The search and find of this ‘treasure’ is however well worth it. More common along the paths of Table Mountain are the bright red flowers of the succulent Crassula coccinea which are pollinated by the Table mountain beauty butterfly.
